Kennel Conditions

I've had the pleasure of meeting several nice beagle people thru the years from all parts of the country. I've been fortunate to have been able to trap black bear in Maine, bear hunt in Ontario, Canada, hog hunt in California, trap predators and deer hunt in south Texas. During these outings I've seen all configurations of dog kennels. For the most part, it is quickly evident the pride some men have in their dogs. Then, there are the others..... I just don't understand how some people can have outstanding hounds, or just claim to, and keep their dogs in deplorable living conditions. I think I've seen almost all examples. I've seen dogs chained to a metal barrel while wading around in mud, makeshift above ground enclosures (I won't even call them kennels) with feces piled high, moldy pans of food the dog wouldn't even eat, and water buckets with so much green slime that the water was thick, you name it. I've stood looking at these conditions while the owner stands beside me and brags on how good this dog and that dog is. It just amazes me. Sometimes I walk away thinking these people shouldn't even be allowed to have a dog. Will you ever see feces in my kennels? You sure will. I don't follow my dogs around with a scoop. And lets be realistic here, dogs will be dogs. But I spend the time as needed to keep up with the kennel cleaning. Sure, I may cut it short some days, especially if it's raining hard or I just don't have the time at the moment. But as soon as possible I'm out there scooping, cleaning, changing the bedding, medicating on schedule, whatever is needed. At this time I do not have concrete kennel floors. Most of my dogs are on the ground and some are occasionally in an above ground kennel. It is our responsibility as dog owners to provide as good of living conditions for our dogs as possible. They ask for nothing, but some deserve much better.
